Where is the default storage location in this phone?

Unable to find the memory card decryption menu in Settings

Problem:

After an encrypted memory card is inserted into the phone, the user finds that there is no memory card decryption menu in Settings and therefore there is no way to decrypt the memory card to access the files on it.

Solution:

Troubleshoot the issue according to the possible causes of it:

  1. The memory card was encrypted on another phone.

Insert the memory card into the phone on which it was encrypted in the first place, then decrypt the memory card.

  2. Your phone has been force reset to factory settings after encrypting the memory card.

    • For security reasons, a phone that has been force reset to factory settings will have all data erased and won't be able to decrypt the memory card. This design ensures your data security, especially when your phone is lost. The data on the memory card won't be restored. You need to format the memory card before using it again.

EMUI 5.X: Go to Settings > Memory & storage > Storage > SD card > Format.

EMUI 8.X or later: Go to Settings > Storage > SD card > Format.

    • A phone that has been reset to factory settings (as opposed to a force factory reset) can still decrypt the memory card. To reset your phone to its factory settings, back up your data, open Reset phone, search for and access Reset phone, then follow the onscreen instructions to complete the task.

      1. If you go to Settings > System > Reset > Reset phone to reset your phone to its factory settings, it is not a force factory reset.

      2. A force factory reset is performed using any of the following methods:

        • Resetting your phone to its factory settings via Recovery or eRecovery mode.

        • Resetting your phone to its factory settings using a third-party app.

        • Erasing data using the Find My Phone feature.

  3. The memory card or the files on it are damaged.

Hot swapping the memory card may damage the card and cause decryption failures. Encrypted data on a damaged memory card won't be able to be restored. You need to format the memory card before using it again.

EMUI 5.X: Go to Settings > Memory & storage > Storage > SD card > Format.

EMUI 8.X or later: Go to Settings > Storage > SD card > Format.
